Monte da Penha
Monte da Penha is a family property made up of 139 hectares, of which 22 hectares are vineyard. Located near Portalegre, the capital of North Alentejo, it was bought by Francisco Fino and his wife Verónica in 1984.

The Property
This family has been involved in the production of high quality wines since the beginning of the xx century, when Joaquin da Cruz Baptista founded the wine "Tapada do Chaves". The success achieved by Joaquim da Cruz Baptista inspired his only daughter, Gertrudes Baptista Fino, to continue his legacy in a passionate way, taking this project even further and becoming well-known for her dedication to the wine business.

In 1984, Francisco Fino, son of Gertrudes Baptista Fino and her companion in the wine business, decides to plant 12 hectares of vineyard on his own property. These vines contributed to the making of the red and white wine “Tapada do Chaves”.
With the sale of “Tapada do Chaves” in 1998, Francisco Fino decides to start a new family project: “Monte da Penha”

The Region
The wine region of Portalegre is situated in the northern part of Alentejo. The wine culture began with the Roman occupation. Various vestiges are seen throughout the region, namely clay pots called “talhas” used to ferment and store the wine.

Terroir and Climate
The vineyards lay on slight slopes, in granite soils and go through intense solar exposition, they are set at an altitude of 450 to 550 meters. The microclimate in this area, Serra de São Mamede, with its rainy, humid winters and high temperatures in the summer, creates exceptional conditions for the vines.

The Vineyard
The property has a total of 22 hectares of vineyard. In 1987, 10 hectares of red vines and 2 hectares of white vines were planted. The varieties for the red wine are Trincadeira, Aragonês (Tempranillo in Spain), Alicante Bouschet and Moreto. The Varieties for the white wine are Fernão Pires, Alva (nacionally known as Roupeiro), Arinto and Trincadeira das Pratas.

For maximum quality of the vines, we count on the help of specialized technicians, the cutting of grapes and leavesfs, and manual grape picking are some of the techniques used by “Monte da Penha”. The grapes are picked at optimum maturity and it is at this time that everyone comes together and helps: family, friends and workers.

The Wines
“Monte da Penha” wines are elegant, intensely fruity, with a well balanced alcohol and acidity typical of the wines of Portalegre.
